Preserving the Places That Tell Abilene’s Story

Historic buildings and sites provide a tangible connection to the people, events, and craftsmanship that shaped Abilene. When these places are threatened by neglect, deterioration, or new development, the community risks losing pieces of its history that cannot be replaced.

The Abilene Preservation League has worked to protect that history since 1977. Established by local residents committed to historic preservation, the nonprofit promotes practical alternatives to demolition when significant properties and sites are at risk.

The League also helps increase public awareness of why preservation matters. By working with public and private organizations, it supports efforts to save, restore, and preserve historically significant structures throughout Abilene. This collaborative work helps ensure that the city’s history remains visible in the places where residents live, work, and gather.

Preservation is not simply about keeping old buildings standing. It allows historic places to remain part of the community’s present while retaining the character and stories that make Abilene distinctive. Encouraging property owners, organizations, and residents to consider preservation before demolition gives these places a chance to serve future generations.

Miers Insurance has selected the Abilene Preservation League as its current Community Cause. For every referral the agency receives, Miers Insurance will donate $20 to the League in the referring client’s honor.
